Tidal and ocean current energy converters
Typically subsea rotors have considerably smaller rotor diameters than wind turbines of the same nominal power. This is based on the fact that, in connection with the roughly 850fold higher density of water compared to air, high forces are applied on the complete system even at low flow velocities. A straightforward and very robust way of transforming the rotor input power into power to drive a fast turning generator is based on the application of a continuous variable hydrostatic transmission as a hydraulic converter. In this case the rotor rotation is transferred to a low speed high volume displacement device which generates a hydraulic flow. This flow is driving with high efficiency a variable high speed axial piston motor coupled with a generator.
Wave energy converters
Rexroth is a specialist for various drive technologies. We believe that hydraulics are exceptionally suited for generating electricity from wave power. With hydraulics it is possible to transform linear oscillation into a controlled rotation (for driving a generator) efficiently and with a minimum on mechanics. In addition, very high transmission ratios can be achieved in an economical way, i.e. the conversion of high forces respectively torques at the input of a wave energy converter (WEC) into considerably lower torques at high rotational speeds at the generator shaft.

Wind energy gearbox oil supply
Modern gearboxes in wind turbines put significant demands on the oil quality. Yet despite their high efficiency, they create energy losses that are released in the form of heat and have to be dissipated. Both requirements are perfectly mastered by the pump filter units from Bosch Rexroth.
Rexroth supports in an early phase with customized systems and solutions for power take off (PTO) and auxiliary drives. In the Applications Center “Ocean Energy” Rexroth is combining all the experience and know-how in this area and focusing them on the development of system solutions for marine energy devices. This way Rexroth supports the OEMs already in the forefront with “wave-to-wire” computer simulations. In an interactive process Rexroth specialists optimize the PTO for the device, plan and deliver ready-to-install hardware modules.
Rexroth possesses a wealth of experience in maritime drive projects and a wide portfolio on components specially developed for this purpose. More than twenty years ago, when the industrial development of wind turbines began, Rexroth engaged as a pioneering partner for gearbox technology as well as drive and control solutions. Together with all important device manufacturers Rexroth was increasing the reliability and efficiency of these core components. This led to a deep understanding for the particularly stringent requirements on reliability for energy production units.
The product portfolio offered for marine energy is also based on Rexroth hydraulic component- and system solutions, which proved themselves to be extraordinarily robust and reliable in various marine applications e.g. Axial piston motors A4VSO or A4VSG for driving a generator (up to 1.000 cubic centimeters per revolution), electro hydraulic pitch drives for tidal energy converters, hydraulic cylinders optimized for being used as linear pumps in wave energy converters, radial piston pump CBM for the drive train, radial piston motors CA and CB for the use in auxiliary drives, and motion logic control MLC for Hydraulics.
