Process design & engineering services for bio-energy industry
Bio-fuel: A Bio-fuel is a fuel that contains energy from geologically recent carbon fixation. These fuels are produced from living organisms. Bio-fuels are made by a biomass conversion from a wide range of natural and organic resources which includes solid biomass, liquid fuel and biogases. Bio-fuels have increased in popularity because of rising oil prices and the need for energy security. The two main bio-fuels are ethanol and bio-diesel; both type of fuel causes less pollution as compared to conventional diesel- powered engines and have the same performance as a regular diesel fuel.
Ethanol fuel is a type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages. It is most often used as a motor fuel, mainly as a bio-fuel additive for gasoline. Bio-ethanol is a form of renewable energy that can be produced common crops, waste bread, flour and milling wastes and other starch based wastes in a continuous plant. Bio-ethanol has a number of advantages over conventional fuels. It comes from a renewable resource and has a reduced greenhouse gas emission compared to conventional fossil fuel. Also, blending bio-ethanol with petrol will help extend the life oil supplies and ensure greater fuel security.
Biodiesel is a vegetable oil or animal fat-based diesel fuel consisting of long-chain alkyl esters. Biodiesel is typically made by chemically reacting lipids with an alcohol producing fatty acid esters. At present biodiesel accounts for only 5% of a blended litre of retail biodiesel whereas higher percentage biodiesel is available (up to 100%) The main benefit of biodiesel is that it can be described as ‘carbon neutral’. This means that the fuel produces no net output of carbon in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2). Biodiesel is rapidly biodegradable and completely non-toxic, meaning spillages represent far less of a risk than fossil diesel spillages. Biodiesel has a higher flash point than fossil diesel and so is safer in the event of a crash.
