Biofuels for transport
Biofuels for Transport: Global Potential and Implications for Sustainable Energy and Agriculture published by Worldwatch Institute brings out every aspect in its entirety on one of the most important topics widely discussed all over the world: biofuels. The IPCC report on Climate change and several expositions concurring its findings as the Stern review, led to an outbreak of searching substitutes for fossil fuels. As the intensity of the above search and discussions around the ramifications of large scale development of biofuels gather momentum the Worldwatch Institute at the instance of the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection undertook a bold initiative to holistically assess the global impacts of biofuels and caution policy planners on the risks of large-scale use of biofuels and call for policy initiatives to counter them. The result is the above well researched volume laid out in eight parts and twenty four chapters.
The first chapter depicts the status and global trends of the biofuels industry and markets. It traces the history of the production programme and its current status and efforts for promoting biofuels in Japan, Canada, EU, US, Brazil, Latin America, Southeast Asia, India, China and some African countries.
In a situation where the climate change issue has become a formidable challenge, biofuels offer a reasonably good option to satiate the fuel and energy requirement world over. We are aware that the petroleum prices are increasing day by day and has recently touched the hundred dollars a barrel mark. In the current geopolitical situation energy issues have become a challenge to national security also. Another important issue being discussed particularly in countries India is the low income level of the farming community. These issues very well converge to a single point that is development and use of biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuels. In the world transportation fuel usage, biofuels now occupy 3 percent and is expected to grow to 6.5 percent by 2012 and to 8.5 percent by 2015.
