Biogas desulphurisation at the Chania WWTP - Case Study
In partnership with Greek engineering firm DIMTECH, Bioconservacion is conducting a biogas desulphurisation project that aims to drive the harnessing of energy from the digestion of slurry at the WWTP in Chania - the plant where wastewater is treated within a semi-arid zone of Crete, located near residential areas.
This facility will be going into operation soon and will use the Bi-On Fe filtration media as the active material for the main biogas desulphurisation equipment.
The managers of the WWTP at Chania screened the different alternatives available on the market for biogas desulphurisation and this resulted in them contacting Bioconservacion. The strong results obtained using Bi-On Fe at other similar facilities in countries such as Portugal and England led the managers of the plant to select this filtration media.
There are many advantages of working with Bi-On Fe both technically and economically - including the following:
- High capacity for absorbing H2S: 45% in weight (over 10 cycles).
- Low loss of load in the equipment - due to its pellet form, compared to other media such as iron filings or granular materials.
- Does not require a minimum level of O2.
- Moderate amounts of volatile organic compounds and CO2 do not affect the optimum functioning of the product.
- Easy to regenerate with ambient air.
Thus Bioconservacion/DIMTECH put forward a proposal for a biogas treatment system using two parallel lines with two fiberglass reactors with capacity for up to 4500kg of Bi-On Fe. This configuration allows biogas to be purified without the need to interrupt the process at any point, thus achieving the maximum energy capture possible.
In order to guarantee the results, extensive monitoring of the results from the purification system will be carried out for the first five cycles of operation. After six months, in-situ testing will be conducted of the effectiveness of the treatment along with an overall assessment of the process and any optimisation needed.
The close collaboration between all companies involved enables information to be exchanged and the results to be closely monitored, thus ensuring excellent advice and rapid troubleshooting where needed.
