It's a first in Canada. An Integrated bioRefinery will be built east of Edmonton, near Vegreville.

ATCO Midstream and Grow-Gen Energy are working together on the project that will use organic wastes and high starch wheat to make green electricity, bioFertilizer and fuel ethanol.

'This project greens Alberta's energy basket using our own home-grown, globally patented technology,' said Shane Chrapko, CEO of Grow-Gen Energy. 'By linking efficient food production with the growing demand for renewable energy, we are taking a major step forward in improving the sustainability of two key industries in the province.'

Once completed, the bioRefinery will produce 2.5 MW of electricity a year, 40 million litres of fuel ethanol and 10 thousand tonnes of premium bioFertilizer.
