EC explains its proposed new directive on cutting fuel consumption in road vehicles
Courtesy of European Commission, Directorate General for Energy
The Commission's revised proposal for a Directive on the promotion of clean and energy efficient road transport vehicles introduces sustainable economics into public procurement of vehicles and transport services. Public authorities will use criteria for lifetime costs for energy consumption, CO2 emissions and pollutant emissions when they procure vehicles. A harmonised methodology will be applied to quantify these costs.
Improving the health and welfare of the European population and achieving long-term environmental sustainability are important objectives for the EU authorities. The challenge is particularly acute for the road transport sector, which depends essentially on oil as single energy source and emits significant quantities of CO2 and pollutants harmful to the environment and human health.
