Enabling incident management and audit
The Electricity Alliance carries out construction works to connect new electricity generation, such as wind farms and power stations, to the National Grid network. It also enhances and replaces existing National Grid assets, including substations, overhead lines and underground cables, to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of the high-voltage electricity network.

Project summary
The Alliances’ first rolled out Rivo in 2007. The solution now services 650 users across 170 locations. Their Rivo platform comprises of the Events, Audits, Non Conformance Reporting, People and Training modules.

The Electricity Alliance is a partnership between National Grid and 15 construction companies. It has been formed to deliver a major investment programme to update and develop the high-voltage transmission network in order to maintain safe, secure and reliable electricity supplies across England and Wales.

Business needs addressing
Initially, the Central Alliance was looking for a solution to help them manage incidents and audits and improve their reporting into National Grid, however it soon became apparent that all the alliances needed a similar solution and National Grid saw that this was an opportunity to adopt a standardised approach and bring consistency of data capture and reporting to the partnership.

Rivo solution
A core suite of modules is available to the Alliances but the flexible modular nature of Rivo’s functionality and licensing means that not all 4 substations have had to deploy the same modules. Those modules that are common to all do offer the standardisation that National Grid envisaged.

Benefits delivered
A shared solution between the 4 substation alliances offered cost and time savings both for the initial implementation and since. The Electricity Alliance can now quickly and easily interrogate the wealth of data in the system and provide accurate statistical information to management of all levels – drilling down into the minutiae or rolling data up to a summary view. This, in turn, allows it to appropriately allocate resource and thus reduce risk and cost.

Rivo provides the tools that underpin the Electricity Alliance’s commitment to providing a safe working environment for its employees and contractors. The control and visibility that Rivo offers helps the Electricity Alliances raise awareness of problem areas thereby reducing risk and maintaining a low accident rate. This ensures legal compliance, increases claims defensibility and reduces the number and value of compensation payments.
