Energetic Use of Residual Waste in France

ABSTRACT
40% of the residual waste processed in France is used for energy purposes. In 2004, 130 incineration plants handled almost 12 million tonnes of waste and produced thermal and electrical energy representing over 1.5 million TOE. Development of the process has been brought to a halt, despite the need for new treatment centres in the different Départements in France. However, the positive impact of new European standards coming in at the end of 2005 should help the industry bring back public support and promote the genuine opportunities which the use of waste offers as a source of renewable energy which can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
