Exploring Bifacial 2MIL for LCOE Optimization
Recently, bifacial solar modules have been gaining popularity, especially with the recent announcement that they are exempt from US tariffs. So we are taking this opportunity to set the record straight regarding our history and future with bifacial module solutions.
Array has a long-established history of mounting panels in a wide variety of configurations, including up to 4 MIL (module-in-landscape). Our standard bifacial solution is already winning big business, but we understand that one-size may not fit every solar site. We are pioneers in the industry and are always looking for innovative and relevant ways to deliver value to our customer. When we develop and deliver technology solutions for customers, we are always mindful of the big picture; LCOE, O&M, and Uptime through our philosophy of Engineered Simplicity.
Array currently mounts panels in a 1 MIP (module-in-portrait) configuration for the majority of installations.Our engineers stick to the proven 1MIP configuration because we are able to save customers money by limiting the amount of hardware needed to mount panels and utilizing our innovative single-bolt module clamp rather than long rails often needed to mount larger tables.
Data-driven Due Diligence in Bifacial ResearchWhile this is our configuration of choice, countless other options are available, most commonly including 2MIP and 2MIL. Array is exploring these module mounting configurations in combination with bifacial technology to ensure we are delivering the lowest LCOE to our customers. At the forefront of this exploration is Array’s commitment to data-driven due diligence for any design changes. Our goal is to discover any potential impact or benefit tracker torque tubes could cause on the rear side irradiance of a bifacial module. Currently, no scientific evidence has proven the torque tube to cause production loss; some preliminary studies have, in fact, pointed toward gains due to reflectivity.
Before jumping to conclusions, Array has engaged CFV Solar Test Laboratory, an independent third party ISO 17025 accredited PV test lab, for the purpose of gathering physical test data of the impact of structural shading when bifacial modules are mounted. To us, the verified cost-benefit analysis is crucial. Any potential loss of rear side panel production may be outweighed by added costs for mounting hardware or just raw material costs.
