Focus Bioenergy No 1 2003: Bioenergy - a sustainable alternative
Courtesy of Elmia AB
Sweden is heavily dependent on imports when it comes to energy. The imported fossil fuels contribute to global environmental
problems. They need to be replaced
with sustainable renewable sources of energy such as bioenergy. Changing from fossil fuels to biofuels mitigates the greenhouse
effect. If we use more bioenergy, and in the appropriate way, the Swedish energy system will become more environmentally sustainable and the effects of eutrophication
and acidification can be alleviated. We will also become less vulnerable to international political complications and currency fluctuations. An increased use of biofuels also creates jobs and tax revenue for the country. Thus, bioenergy is a very important part of the transition to a long-term sustainable energy system.
