GIS in Petro Gas Pipeline Integrity and Hazard Consequence Analaysis
GIS APPLICATION FOR PETRO & GAS PIPELINES SYSTEMS
The major challenges facing the Petro and Gas pipeline supply and distribution Industry are:
- Isolated and distant location of operating and service areas from the well drilling locations and source points
- Distributed customers with varying patterns of consumption.
- Variety in plant and equipment with periodic operational and maintenance needs, interface with customer needs, demand and supply variation management, interaction with sensitive area governance, hazard consequence analysis, local distributing areas and data logging needs for measurement and operation of facilities.
- Diverse consequence areas enroute the gas pipeline system for hazard assessment and mitigation.
- Monitoring and control of parameters like pressure, flow, cathodic protection for corrosion.
- Crossings at rail, road, canals, other pipelines, commercial and industrial areas and habitations.
- Interface with Private and Public land for annual m payment of right of way and lease hold areas.
- Supply and demand assessment for planning and accounting purposes.
- Manpower and equipment planning for optimization of resources.
While different issues are associated with each type interfacing elements, GIS application can be generated into broadly six categories. These may include one or more of the below mentioned applications
- Inventory and data base development for spatial and attribute information at one place for planning and decision making
- Supply and Demand assessment for resource planning, billing and accounting
- Network analysis for customer demands, needs, complaint and service management.
- Facility management control, operation and maintenance using Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)
- ogistics and Man power planning including Public relations and safety management.
- HCA ( High Consequence Area) analysis and preventive control Logistics.
The data needed for developing the GIS database and decision support system depend upon the extent to which, the project proponent wishes to implement the GIS based management and monitoring systems. The extent to which GIS database can be developed also depends upon the availability of proper instrumentation and control systems for data acquisition and feed forward systems to support SCADA stations. MIS support is also needed for proper design of decision support system to manage the system as whole, including movable and immovable resources like equipment, manpower and cash flows.
