This project was completed for a remote cattle station in Regional Queensland to replace their SWER (single wire earth return) power network to combat increasing power prices and to vastly improve the reliability of their power source.
The 26.25kW of solar modules integrate with an advanced AC/DC Inverter Charger unit that allows for both AC and DC coupled solar supply and charging. The 6.25kW DC coupled solar modules have been orientated on a reverse pitch towards the early morning sun in order to recover the batteries from the previous night consumption. Being DC coupled the modules’ only job is to charge and maintain the batteries. The remaining 20kW of solar modules is connected through AC Inverters that supply power directly to the AC appliances during daylight hours to reduce strain on the batteries and to improve the efficiency of the system.
The 20kW of AC solar modules have been split with 6KW facing North West and 14kW facing Due North to supply North East, North and North West solar energy to the cattle station. This has been set up this way to reduce the amount of 'peak charging' and to spread the AC supply and AC charging over a wider period of the day further reducing the amount of cycles on the batteries. Any excess AC solar generation is then fed back through the AC/DC Inverter Charger to further charge the batteries. The solar system also has automatic start generator integration for improved reliability and additional charging if necessary.
The success of this system is not only providing an improved quality of power compared to the electricity networks volatile voltage supply, but it also offers 15% payback per year viable financial investment. In certain seasons the cattle station can experience up to 20 power cuts per day and can be without power for weeks at a time. The switch to this solar system now ensures that they will never be without power again.
This system supplies over 100kWh of electricity per day to run heavy machinery, power tools, air-conditioners, water filtration, bore pumps and general appliances. This Off-Grid System is estimated to accumulatively generating over 103,531kWh of clean electric power in the following 25 years, and reduces nearly 877 tons of CO2. In an area that is difficult to service, Phono Solar modules were chosen due to incredible temperature co-efficient, proven yields in the harsh Queensland conditions and reliability.
