Prospects for nuclear power development in the Russian Federation and Central Asian countries
Currently, the Russian economy is based mainly on the export of fossil fuel resources and other raw materials. The contribution of nuclear power to the country's overall electricity production is about 16%, which is relatively low given its available potential, namely, advanced technologies, developed infrastructure, skilled personnel and scientists. It is now clear from the sharp increase in the price of fossil fuels that fossil-fuel-based power would be unable to support the sustainable development of Russian society in the long term. At the same time, nuclear power is capable of both meeting the country's energy needs and providing energy security.
