Research and experimental development of a green filter for the depuration of the “El Albujón” watercourse effluents by using native microalgae consortia

The RAMBLA project has aimed at the research and experimental development of a “green filter” system that would serve to purify contaminated effluents from the El Albujón watercourse, using local microalga consortia. The contribution of the nutrients contained in these effluents is one of the main causes of the eutrophication of the Mar Menor, the largest salty lagoon in Europe.
The results have shown that the purification of this type of effluents using indigenous microalgae consortiums is technically and economically feasible. The yield obtained from this system was optimal and a large percentage of chemical fertilizer compounds (nitrates, phosphates, etc.) contained in the water of the watercourse was eliminated, as well as almost all the present emerging contaminants were reduced (herbicides and drugs).
The RAMBLA project has been co-financed to 80% with FEDER Funds and by the Institute of Development of the Region of Murcia (INFO), within the aid program for companies focused on promoting research and technology development (2015 call). BUGGYPOWER has counted for this project with the collaboration of the Technological Center of Energy and The Environment (CETENMA).
