SULFURIC ACID PLANT TAIL GAS CLEANUP WITH CANSOLV“ SYSTEM SO2 SCRUBBING TECHNOLOGY
The tail gas from a single absorption sulfuric acid plant typically contains 2000-3000 ppmv of
unreacted SO2. Emission regulations for new plants in most jurisdictions today require cleanup
of this stream prior to discharge into the atmosphere and many grandfathered units are being
required to decrease emission levels. The current paradigm is to add a second stage of conversion,
which reduces the SO2 concentration to 100-500 ppmv. Studies indicate that the CANSOLV“
System SO2 scrubbing technology, a regenerable process which utilizes an aqueous amine
absorbent, can provide an economical alternative, capable of reducing emissions close to zero.
The SO2 scrubbed from the tail gas can be either recycled to achieve total conversion to sulfuric
acid, or utilized or sold as pure SO2 . The technology is also applicable to the capture of fugitive
SO2 emissions or the concentration of streams too weak for normal acid plants.
