The production of biofuels and renewable chemicals by fast pyrolysis of biomass
Courtesy of Inderscience Publishers
Bio-energy can provide more renewable energy requirements than any other technology. This paper focuses on fast pyrolysis as the only thermal process that directly delivers a high yield of liquid. This can be used on site or transported to centralised facilities for utilisation. This offers the potential for optimisation, greater economies of scale and exploitation of bio-refineries. The overall technology is described, particularly the reaction systems. The primary liquid product is characterised, and the potential for production of chemicals and transport fuels is explored. The main barriers to the market deployment of the various technologies are identified and briefly discussed.

Feedstock recycling from plastic and thermoset fractions of used computers (I): pyrolysis
The increasing production of computers, the progress in their performance, and the shorter time between innovation and production has led to increasing numbers of obsolete products. It has thus become necessary to recover some materials from old computers and to protect the environment from a new type of pollution. Such recycling is difficult because of the diversity of polymeric materials used, e.g., thermoplastics (polystyrene or acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) and thermosets (epoxy resins), and the relatively...

Nigeria will use Brazilian blueprint to found its new biofuels industry
Documento sin título Brazil’s successful development of an ethanol-based biofuels sector since the 1980s, hardly noticed at first, has been the envy of other countries more dependent on oil imports. The government had the foresight to notice, long before the oil paradigm started to shift towards peak production, that its vast hectares of sugar cane could be put to good use as an ethanol source. Hence, it granted heavy subsidies to agricultural and related industries to alter the source of transport...

Oil Chiefs Clash over Energy and Climate
Conflicting messages about how the oil industry should respond to climate change and manage its reputation have been sent out by the heads of three oil majors - ExxonMobil, Shell and ChevronTexaco. None foresees a challenge to the supremacy of oil and gas for the next three decades - but on many other issues the transatlantic rift runs deep. ExxonMobil remains the target for a global campaign by environmentalists who see it as one of the main architects of the Bush administration`s resistance to concerted...

Commission Calls for New Policies as EU Greenhouse Gases Rise Again
EU greenhouse gas emissions rose for the second successive year in 2001, raising concerns over progress towards targets under the Kyoto Protocol. The European Commission has responded with a call for `additional measures` to cut emissions from industry, transport and products. Under the Kyoto Protocol, the EU signed up to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 8% below the 1990 level by 2008-12. The overall target was carved up between Member States in a `burden-sharing` agreement which was made legally binding...

Pyrolysis
Introduction: Pyrolysis is formally defined as chemical decomposition induced in organic materials by heat in the absence of oxygen. In practice, it is not possible to achieve a completely oxygen-free atmosphere; actual pyrolytic systems are operated with less than stoichiometric quantities of oxygen. Because some oxygen will be present in any pyrolytic system, nominal oxidation will occur. If volatile or semivolatile materials are present in the waste, thermal desorption will also occur. Pyrolysis transforms...

Ex Situ Thermal Treatment for Soil, Sediment, and Sludge
The main advantage of ex situ treatments is that they generally require shorter time periods, and there is more certainty about the uniformity of treatment because of the ability to screen, homogenize, and continuously mix the soils. Ex situ processes, however, require excavation of soils leading to increased costs and engineering for equipment, possible permitting, and materials handling worker safety issues. Thermal treatments offer quick cleanup times but are typically the most costly treatment group. This...
