Waste co-incineration in the European Community, is the sky the limit?
The co-combustion of waste in industrial furnaces -co-incineration- attracts considerable interest in the European Community, because of the combination of perceived business incentives, regulatory developments, and the slate of available technological options. It was found, however, that EU-regulation developed to ensure safe and environmentally acceptable processing of waste represents a clear constraint to the development of co-incineration in e.g. power plants, cement kilns, and steel blast-furnaces. Of the conditions specified by EU-regulation for waste incineration the lower-limits set for furnace temperature and oxygen-level in particular reduce the number of industrial processes eligible for co-incineration.
