About Us
BGC Environmental Brokerage Services is a division of BGC Capital Markets, L.P. Formerly known as CantorCO2e, L.P., we became BGC Environmental Brokerage Services. L.P. in August 2011 following the acquisition of our North American business by BGC Partners, Inc. (Nasdaq: BGCP), a leading global brokerage company primarily servicing the wholesale financial markets.
Our roots began in 1992 and since then we have grown to become a leading environmental brokerage company that has brokered numerous trades with a market value exceeding $10 billion.
BGC uniquely offers transaction services to clients engaged in using energy and managing emissions across the world -- a truly integrated approach that is necessary to effectively help preserve our environment.
BGC’s philosophy is that long-term change in the way in which we use energy, and our collective impact on our environment, cannot happen without the involvement of the world’s capital markets – it takes money to finance change. Of course money alone is not enough, you also need to ensure the environmental integrity of what you are doing, and to do this on a large scale requires organization. BGC – its staff and its predecessors - has been at the forefront of the development of environmental markets since they were first conceived. We have given thousands of hours of our time to develop markets that work financially, while maintaining environmental integrity. We have helped design all of the world’s major environmental trading schemes – we have developed market rules, developed methodologies, advised on standards – and of course we have been instrumental in transferring billions of dollars to environmental projects world-wide.
History
BGC Environmental Brokerage Services was first established in 1992 under the name Cantor Environmental Brokerage, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cantor Fitzgerald. It was founded by Carlton Bartels, a visionary in environmental issues in the U.S., to implement the ground-breaking emissions trading markets introduced under the Clean Air Act. Cantor Environmental Brokerage brought liquidity to these fledgling markets – the world’s first environmental markets – and established a long list of ‘firsts’ in emissions trading. CO2e.com was formed in 2000 to address the prospect of global greenhouse gas emissions trading created by the signature of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. CO2e.com rapidly formed a strong reputation world-wide as a leader in greenhouse gas emissions trading, and in 2002 joined with Mitsui & Co. to expand its services in Asia. CO2e.com has been first to market with most of the trading structures in use around the world, pushing the development of the market through innovative products and through giving time and expertise to the development of the necessary legislative frameworks.

Formerly known as CantorCO2e, L.P., we became BGC Environmental Brokerage Services in August 2011 following the acquisition of our North American business by BGC Partners, Inc. (Nasdaq: BGCP), a leading global brokerage company primarily servicing the wholesale financial markets. BGCP has offices in 25 cities around the world. This global, yet local presence across the world, together with the unique experience of our staff, enables us to provide a level of service that few can match.
BGC helps people across the world to manage the financial aspects of their energy and environmental choices. In North America and Europe this means providing professional brokerage services to the energy and environmental commodity markets, and elsewhere around the world this means bringing our expertise, money, and technology to projects that reduce emissions.
BGC serves all of the world’s principal emissions markets, including the Kyoto markets (CDM, JI and European emissions trading), the USA compliance markets, and the voluntary carbon market. We help companies transact via electronic trading screens, recorded telephone lines, auctions and negotiated contracts. We broker green energy products, advise equity investment funds on carbon finance, introduce investors to projects, and structure forward sales to enable project developers to fund their investments. We help ‘clean-tech’ technology developers to manage their intellectual property, to develop their licensing strategies, and to roll out their technologies through our global network. All in all, an integrated set of services to bring environmental commodities to market, and to help our clients manage their energy and environmental risks world-wide. In addition to assisting clients in the marketing, selling and buying of credits, BGC staff possess expertise in protocol development, including the execution of and/or participation in the Clean Development Mechanism.
