BTG BioLiquids - BTG Biomass Technology Group
BTG BioLiquids is a pyrolysis technology provider. Our technology efficiently converts most types of non-food biomass into a second generation bio–oil within two seconds. Based on 15 years of developing, optimizing and scaling up our technology we deliver commercial scale pyrolysis plants to our customers today. BTG-BTL is active in the biomass energy sector, and has developed technology to mimic nature. Where the Earth formed oil reserves in millions of years, BTG-BTL is doing it in just 2 seconds. For this we use pyrolysis technology, which produces a dark-brown liquid, best known as pyrolysis oil. We’ve spent the last 15 years developing and optimizing pyrolysis technology, as it is difficult to mimic mother nature. Our pyrolysis technology is now mature. We can now multiply the concept and deliver actual pyrolysis plants to our customers. The pyrolysis oil can be used in boilers to produce heat and electricity at the moment of our customer’s choice. About Us
The world is changing fast, and the changes are visible everywhere: in the financial world, in our climate and in the way we produce and use energy. It is an illusion to think that the world will be static and predictable in the foreseeable future. On the contrary, it is obvious that the world’s fossil energy resources like oil and natural gas will gradually run out in the next decades. Oil and gas reserves that took hundreds of millions of years to be built up are being used by mankind in less than 300 years.
BTG-BTL appreciates these changes, and helps to develop the right answers to it. It is adamant that mankind should find a more sustainable way of living. There will not be a single miracle solution addressing all problems. Rather several solutions will have to be developed in parallel in the years to come. Solutions that include solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, tidal power, energy from biomass, etc.
Our pyrolysis technology is now mature. We can now multiply the concept and deliver actual pyrolysis plants to our customers. The pyrolysis oil can be used in boilers to produce heat and electricity at the moment of our customer’s choice. There is absolutely no need for the pyrolysis oil to be consumed at the time and place where it is produced. Production and use can be decoupled, and pyrolysis oil can easily be stored for a couple of years.
I am happy to see that a lot of companies are interested in partnering with us to work on the upgrading of the pyrolysis oil quality and to use pyrolysis oil as feedstock for sustainable petrol or diesel. The future is very promising and challenging for us and for our partners alike.
I am looking forward to being in contact with you to see where we can fulfill your needs to make your process more sustainable by using pyrolysis oil.
History
In 2007, after delivering a pyrolysis plant to a customer in Malaysia and two test facilities, BTG established BTG BioLiquids B.V. (trade name BTG-BTL) in response to the large amount of requests they were getting from the market concerning their pyrolysis technology. BTG-BTL is dedicated to the worldwide commercial implementation of the fast pyrolysis technology developed by BTG.
Currently, a 5 t/hr plant design (Figure 1) has been designed, built and succesfully taken into operation and a pipeline of projects and clients all over the world is lined up. Clients are investors, wood and agro-industry, waste and energy utilities, and oil companies. A historical overview of Fast Pyrolysis research and developments is given in Figure 1.
BTG Biomass Technology Group, one of the pioneers in pyrolysis, started the fast pyrolysis developments at the beginning of the nineties with a new reactor concept in which no inert gases were required to enable rapid mixing of biomass and hot bed material. This concept was the result of research done at the University of Twente where rapid mixing was achieved by mechanical mixing inside a rotating cone reactor. Over the years, BTG further improved and optimised the concept. BTG's modified rotating cone technology has resulted in several patents.
In 1998 BTG finalised the pilot plant on laboratory scale (80-250 kg/hr). A smaller version of 1-5 kg/hr dry biomass input was developed several years later (in 2004) to be able to perform smaller tests with more challenging feedstocks. BTG has successfully tested over 45 different kinds of feedstock over the years, ranging from relatively simple feedstocks like wood to difficult feedstocks like sludge or EFB. In 2005 BTG Biomass Technology Group (The Netherlands) started the demonstration of the technology on Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) in Malaysia on a scale of 2 t/hr. The successful construction of the first production unit was built for and operated by a client in Malaysia.
Mission / Vision
'BTG-BTL wants to contribute to a more sustainable society by providing a renewable alternative to fossil fuels. This will be done through the delivery and deployment of fast pyrolysis technology for converting green biomass and organic residues into pyrolysis oil in an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable manner'.
Fossil fuel has been formed from biomass by nature in millions of years. Pyrolysis oil can be produced by mankind in only seconds. Although economic oil reserves have been increasing over the last decades, the (economic) need for a renewable oil, not competing with food or with land for food, is increasing steadily. Pyrolysis liquids can be stored, traded, transported and applied universally, just like mineral oil. Pyrolysis allows the decoupling of biofuel production and its actual use.
Corporate Social Responsibility
BTG Biomass Technology Group BV aims to operate its activities according to the 3 P's (People, Planet, Profit) of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). CSR is also covered by the mission and vision of BTG where sustainability is a central topic.
At BTG-BTL we calculate our Carbon Footprint on a yearly basis to determine the greenhouse gas emissions for our office and for travelling by car or where necessary by plane. We strive to make our company activities climate neutral as far as possible by using the Trias Energetica. The energy used by BTG-BTL is generated by green energy sources and where possible the energy consumption is reduced. Low carbon travel is actively promoted, both for business purposes and commuting. Emissions which cannot be avoided are offset by purchasing gold standard CO2 credits. By investing in these credits we can make sure that the same amount of emissions is reduced elsewhere, as well as bringing sustainable development to the local inhabitants of these regions.
The development of employees and students is important to us. BTG offers students of all educational levels the possibility to do an internship or write a graduation assignment throughout the year. BTG is closely involved in making events sustainable in the Twente region and beyond. In this way BTG tries to transfer its sustainable vision to third parties and to develop and realize renewable energy projects.
