CEO and Founder Johan Kuikman
Founder of Fortis Wind Energy, Johan Kuikman, has 35 years of experience in the design and development of wind turbines. Being an aircraft engineer by profession his focus has always been getting a better performance for a lower price. This philosophy is nowadays one of the solid basements of Fortis Wind Energy.

CCO and Co-Owner Eric Jahn
Co-Owner of Fortis Wind Energy, Eric Jahn, has over 30 years of experience as Global Key Account Manager in Industrial Automation. From 2011 he joined Fortis Wind Energy and his focus is Business Development of Clean Energy powered by Small Wind Turbines or as Hybrid solutions.

Fortis Wind Energy, founded in February 1997, is based on over 30 years experience in Renewable Energy, especially in small wind turbines. Fortis Wind Energy is the predecessor of LMW, which was founded at the end of the seventies.

LMW developed and produced small wind turbines for houses without connection to the utility grid or houseboats in the Netherlands and a few European countries. From 1981 onward a large number of people from African and Asian countries became increasingly interested in a small battery charging wind turbine. During these years LMW acquired a considerable amount of experience for the erection and maintenance of the wind turbine in developing countries. Local service & commissioning was practically impossible. So a maintenance-free wind turbine was essential.

In 1985 the LMW 2500 and LMW 3600 wind turbine where developed with a rotor diameter of 5,0 m, suitable for battery charging and water pumping. In 1997/1998 redesign as the “Montana” with Ne-Fe-Br magnets in the generator and with a rated output of more than 5000 Watt.

From 1990 onward, Fortis Wind Energy developed systems for the small wind turbines systems as:

  • wind/PV solar stand alone system for battery charging
  • wind battery-charging system with diesel generator backup
  • small wind turbines suitable for grid connections by means of an inverter
  • wind electric pumping systems (WEPS) with DC motor driven pumps and AC motor driven pumps

Since 1981 over 6,400 Fortis units have been erected worldwide and more are being added frequently. Our sturdy reliable wind turbines operate across all continents, meeting a variety of applications such as powering rural farms, residence, public buildings and small and medium-size businesses.

A substantial number of these Fortis turbines operate in highly demanding environments including those facing frequent exposure to high winds and harsh operating conditions. Typical examples include turbines operating in Mauretania’s hot, windy and sand-swept Sahara desert, or extreme cold temperatures and stormy wind conditions experienced by Fortis units while powering scientific research stations at Antarctica including very high wind speeds.

Why wind energy?
The main drivers for wind power:

  • the primary energy (wind) is cost-free

On-Grid Wind
Fortis Small Wind Turbine Systems can be connected to the public distribution network. These are called grid-connected systems. A grid-connected wind turbine can reduce your consumption of utility-supplied electricity for your domestic appliances or bigger loads for business empowerment.

If the wind turbine cannot deliver the amount of energy you need, the utility makes up the difference. When the wind turbine produces more electricity than your demand requires, the excess is returned as a “Feed-in” into the utility.

With this wind turbine configuration, your system will operate only when the utility grid is available. During grid disconnection, the wind turbine is automatically shut down due to safety reasons.

There are options for incentives, so called FIT (Feed-in-Tariff) for the sale of surplus of electricity to the utility.

Federal regulations, in many countries, require utilities to connect with and purchase power from small wind energy systems. However, you should contact your utility before connecting to its distribution lines to address any power quality and safety concerns.


Off-Grid Wind
Fortis Small Wind Turbine Systems can be used in Off-Grid systems, also called stand-alone systems, not connected to an electric distribution network or grid. In these applications, Small Wind Turbine Systems can be used to charge batteries and store the generated energy as a back-up power.

Off-Grid power systems can provide reliable Off-Grid power supply in isolated areas for homes, farms, or even entire communities that are far from the nearest utility lines.

An Off-Grid System may be practical for you if the items below describe your situation:

  • you live in an area with average annual wind speed of at least 4.0 meters per second
  • a grid connection is not available or can only be made through an expensive extension
  • the investment of a power line to a remote site to connect with the utility grid can be prohibitive depending on terrain conditions
  • You would like to gain your own independent energy
  • You would like to generate clean power and reduce Carbon dioxide (CO2)


Hybrid Micro-Grid
Together with Independent Energy our Strategic Partner we design turnkey Wind & Solar systems. These systems can be configured as On-Grid as well Off-Grid.

Our competence is to design, manufacture and install turnkey Wind & Solar as Hybrid solutions for remote power supply in isolated areas. The power supply is based on Solar Modules & Small Wind Turbines. A combination of different but complementary energy generation sources. The output of the system for appliances is in DC – / AC loads or both. Off-Grid systems can be supplied with integrated storage options by a Battery Bank and/or DC cooling for extreme environmental conditions. Adding a Genset (fossil-fuel backup generator), used as a backup power supply, guarantees a non-stop supply of energy.

All systems can be monitored locally & remotely (via GSM & web-based solutions).
