The History of the University
Gebze Institute of Technology (GIT), which was founded on the 11th of July, 1992 with the legislation no: 3837, started its services in Istanbul, and moving to Gebze on the 3rd of December, 1993 to the 6th floor of a plaza, accelerated its foundation with the rector, a professor assigned in accordance with the 40/b article of the legislation no: 2547, and 15 officers.
GIT started its activities on the 10th of October, 1994 at the Additional Services Building in the center of the town. Its first academic year was 1994-1995, in which it took 80 students in total to the departments of Electronics Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Management, Biology and Chemistry, so it started its education.
In the year 1977, three buildings made as carcass, were handed over to GIT with attempts under the supervision of Public Agency. These buildings, in order to be used for education and research activities, were repaired in a short time and at the two corners, Rectorate and Conference Hall were added to its full capacity today, for uses of administrative units, department chairs, dean’s offices, classrooms; besides, “Central Heat Building” was constructed and was opened to service on October 3rd, 1995. These buildings are the first units of Cayirova campus whose open area today is 1.370.070 m2, and closed area is 26.612 m2.
GIT first accepted students to its graduate programs in the academic year 1994-1995. In the academic year 2001-2002, 44 undergraduate students were accepted to Electronic and Computer Engineering Departments and started their education. In addition to these two departments, undergraduate students were accepted to Engineering Faculty Materials Science and EngineeringDepartment and Science Faculty Math and Physics Departments in the academic year of 2002-2003; to Molecular Biology and Genetics Department in the academic year of 2009-2010; to Architecture Faculty Architecture and Management Faculty Management Department in the academic year of 2008-2009. So today, in GIT, apart from graduate programs, undergraduate programs are also given under eight departments.
Apart from these, the entrance of the Cayirova Campus has been rearranged, the construction of parking lots and consultancy building, the swimming pool in the area of GIT Culture Center and its subsidiary establishments have been finalized. Besides, GIT-KOSGEB Technology Development Center, which was established in GIT Cayirova Campus with a closed area of 1100 m2 in 2000, is also continuing its services. The Foreign Languages Department building, whose construction was finished in February, 2006 and which has an area of 2000 m2, started its services within the same year.
In our building which has 1200 m2 of closed area in the 2900 m2 area in Gebze, there is an OSYM bureau and a guesthouse.
In the north of Muallimkoy Campus lies the TEM Motorway, Dilovasi Industrial Zone in the east, Marmara Sea in the South, and in the west TUBITAK Marmara Research Center. Besides, the route of Ankara-Istanbul railway is at the edge of the Campus. In terms of geographic position, GIT stands in a point where road, sea and railway networks intersect.
The Engineering Faculty Environmental Engineering and Science Faculty Chemistry Department in Muallimkoy Campus whose first mortar was thrown by our esteemed 9th president Suleyman Demirel in 31st of October 1995 and whose construction began in 1996, are in service. As part of the infrastructure project of Muallimkoy Campus the ring road has been improved, the construction of the water depot and power distribution unit has been finished, the roads have been asphalted and parking lots have been made. Infrastructure works like the conveyance line, electric, phone, internet, sewage, etc… of both the buildings which started functioning were provided. A student residence of 500 beds which started eight years ago in the area west of Muallimkoy Campus which was reserved for The Institute of Credits and Residences, is in service. Today, Muallimkoy Campus owns a total of 3.898.835 m2 open area and a total of 21.750 m2 closed area. As a last improvement, the buildings constructed in Cayirova Campus for Computer Engineering, Chemistry Engineering Departments in 2007 and for Materials Science and Engineering Department in 2011; started their functions.
