About us
First in the World for Green Tech
Styria in southern Austria has an impressive record in cutting-edge green technologies that goes back over 100 years: Several past inventors, such as Nikola Tesla, have worked in Graz, and Styrian inventor, Viktor Kaplan invented the breakthrough technology for hydroelectric power. Solar thermal energy started its successful market advance here in the 1970s, while many pioneers in recycling technology innovation come from Styria. Current world firsts include the first tidal lagoon power plant, the first large scale green brewery and the first tower with transparent energy glass.
Where green innovation grows
With over 20 global technology leaders (such as Andritz, Samsung, and Siemens) based in this hotspot of innovation, the title of Green Tech Valley is fully justified. Companies here grow faster than the global competition: In 10 years, they have more than tripled the sales of environmental products and services (more than 10% of GDP) and the number of employees has more than doubled.
The Cluster initiates 100 innovation projects
With the Strategy 2015-2020, the cluster is placing the focus for growth on green innovation. In the key strategic areas of Green Energy (especially biomass, hydro and solar), Green Building and Green Resources (especially recycling), the Green Tech Cluster aims to launch 100 new innovation projects over 5 years and actively drive the development of the Green Tech location.
Innovate, Internationalise, Initiate
Based around the three “I”s of Innovate, Internationalise, Initiate, the cluster supports companies with R & D project development, the concise Technology-Radar magazine, open innovation tools and the Green Tech Innovators Club with free space for new ideas. The Green Tech Cluster is proactive in the alliance of 15 global clusters in the ICN International Cleantech Network and provides access to international markets. Tailored ideas, strategy consultancy and contacts complete the portfolio of cluster support services.
High efficiency
In 2015 alone, the cluster organisation has jointly initiated 24 innovation projects, generated 1158 ideas within companies and successfully brokered 1122 targeted B2B contacts. This includes innovations that have already become established in the market, such as the ATT Powerfilm and the LED Booster from EcoCan. The Green Tech Cluster is therefore an effective partner for the green technologies of tomorrow and the future.
Breaking international ground
The Green Tech Cluster Styria GmbH is a public-private partnership, both in ownership and funding, and has some 10 employees. The Cluster has been awarded many times for: excellent cluster management, the most innovative growth project in the EU (European Commission) and the No. 1 Environmental Technology Cluster worldwide (US rankings).
