History
MT has evolved significantly over the past four decades. The firm was originally founded as a Professional Association of partners and associates in 1971 by Charles Johnson, Michael mccordic and Bruce Thompson under the name of Johnson, mccordic & Thompson, P.A., in Silver Spring, Maryland. The company focused on the areas of planning, engineering, and surveying for residential and commercial projects. In 1978, a second, similar private development office opened in Fairfax, Virginia.
In 1979, Fred Mirmiran joined the partnership with the goal of expanding into the public works market by focusing on transportation engineering for Federal, state and local public agencies. In 1980, JMT expanded its public works market into Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and the name of JMT was changed to Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, JMT developed into a multi-modal transportation firm providing infrastructure improvements for:
- Highways and Bridges
- Aviation
- Rail and Transit
- Marine
- Pedestrians/Bicyclists
From the mid-1990s, JMT continued to diversify our markets to include services for:
- Buildings and Facilities
- Water/Wastewater and Utilities
- Federal Programs
- Information Technology
Today, JMT provides consulting services to a varied client base of public and private entities. This diversification of markets and services has resulted in considerable geographic expansion, which has allowed JMT to provide services across the United States.
Our Accomplishments:
We have provided planning, design and construction management services for many major award winning projects in the United States as highlighted in the Project Portfolio and Awards & Honors sections of our site.
JMT has improved our ENR Ranking for the 'Top 500 Design Firms' from #464 in 1995 to our current ranking of #96. The founding philosophy of the firm, exceeding client expectations with the highest quality of work, continues to be the key element of our success. A successful project is achieved by thorough analysis supported by individual attention and the extensive professional and technical experience of dedicated employees.
We at JMT are proud of our 40 year history. We look forward to the next 40 years.

JMT is dedicated to giving back to the community through both charitable donations and volunteer work. Employees may choose to participate in the Community Service Committee, which coordinates various events throughout the year. We have participated in the following charitable events over the years:

Our involvement in these organized activities only helps to strengthen and enrich the various communities in which we live. At JMT, we also offer a Community Involvement Match Program which allows employees to raise money for a charitable organization by having JMT match up to $100 of an employee's annual donation. This program further extends our reach within our local communities, making a difference in the lives of others. We also have a tradition at JMT of supporting various world relief efforts in which JMT matches employee contributions dollar for dollar. What better way to make an impact and extend our reach and support in our local and worldwide communities.
Small Businesses and Teaming with JMT
JMT is eager to team with qualified small businesses on projects ranging from the local to the national level.
For our government agency contracts, we typically team with firms whose personnel are professionally registered or certified to perform work in disciplines that complement and/or augment our services. More specifically:
- Federal contracts: we seek teaming opportunities with small businesses that are certified by the Small Business Administration (SBA) as Disadvantaged hubzone and 8(a) businesses, Women Owned Businesses, Veteran-Owned/Service-Disabled businesses, and other categories identified by the Federal Acquisition Regulation (a good resource is www.acquisition.gov/far).
- Other government contracts: we team with firms that possess the applicable certifications and registrations for the state or local area. Examples include disadvantaged business enterprises (DBE), minority business enterprises (MBE), and women-owned business enterprises (WBE), as well as prequalification to provide services to the specific agency.
Our teaming partners are expected to possess the requisite experience and qualifications to perform the work. In addition, they must maintain the necessary insurance and bonding as appropriate, and be in good standing with taxation and health and safety agencies as well as with any other agency-specific requirements.
We encourage you to contact us using this form with regard to teaming on current and upcoming opportunities. We will likely request that you follow up with copies of your Federal Standard Form 330 and other relevant company brochures/materials.
In addition, if you are interested in performing Federal work with us, we encourage you to register your firm in the Central Contractor Registration database (located at www.bpn.gov/ccr). Upon completion of this registration process, your small business will be listed in the SBA's Dynamic Search Database. Please visit www.sba.gov for more details about this process.
