Thanet Offshore Wind Farm: Planning For The Environment & The Economy
In autumn 2005, Thanet Offshore Wind Farm was the first Crown Estate Round 2 development to receive consent, guided by our seascape and visual impact assessment (SVIA) and cumulative impact assessment.
The farm became operational in 2010, generating up to 300MW – enough to run 200,000 homes annually. It’s also increased local employment, creating 800 jobs during its three-year construction and 20 permanent jobs since. Thanet 2030, a regeneration vision for the district, cites wind energy as an important factor in the local economy’s renewal.
We’ve now worked on seven of the 15 Round 2 wind farms.
Masterplan For The Great Fen
The Fens were England’s greatest wetlands. Now drained, they’re farmed exhaustively. We’ve created a masterplan to restore natural wetland and low-intensity farming, while:
- protecting and enhancing natural environments;
- creating accessible environments for education and recreation;
- developing the local economy;
- contributing to climate change adaption and mitigation
Our plan creates jobs and a major carbon sink, absorbing 320,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. It enables the growth of biomass crops, floodwater attenuation, the protection of habitats and species; while also involving communities and attracting visitors. We’ve restored a natural balance which includes productive agriculture and space for people.
