The first group of turbines at the province’s largest wind farm was set in motion today by Premier Greg Selinger, sparking electricity production near St. Joseph. “It’s a thrill to start up the first of the turbines at this 138-megawatt wind farm and get the project up and running,” said Selinger. “As one of the largest wind farms in Canada, this project builds on Manitoba’s position as a leader in renewable energy development, complementing our existing hydroelectricity supply, geothermal activities, biofuel production and aggressive energy-conservation programming.” Manitoba Hydro and Pattern Energy negotiated a 27-year power purchase agreement to make the project possible. Work continues on the balance of turbines and they are expected to be fully operational in the next month or two.
