About Us
New Earth provides waste treatment and composting services to local authorities using proven mechanical and biological treatment technologies. The Company’s design, build, finance and operate capabilities deliver recycling and landfill diversion performance, helping local authority customers to achieve or exceed their statutory targets.
New Earth has two existing operational in-vessel composting (IVC) facilities and three mechanical biological treatment (MBT) facilities, with a sixth waste treatment facility and its first commercial energy recovery scheme both in development.
New Earth is pursuing an ambitious growth plan to consolidate its position as a leading independent supplier of waste management services throughout the United Kingdom. This entails a pipeline of advanced tendering opportunities and sites in development. New Earth currently manages around 350,000 tonnes of waste a year. Further growth will follow from additional waste treatment developments and the generation of low-carbon renewable energy.
The Company currently has around 130 staff employed at its head office in Dorset and at its five operating sites. This includes its own specialist in-house compliance, tendering, land and planning, and construction teams.
In addition to the core waste management business, New Earth has established a renewable energy business, New Earth Energy. This business will generate low-carbon renewable energy from refuse-derived fuels and biomass using emerging advanced thermal conversion (ATC) technologies in the form of pyrolysis and gasification. It is also involved in anaerobic digestion projects.
The Company has recruited a strong engineering team to develop its own in-house ATC technology. A full-scale, modular demonstration ATC unit is installed at Canford to trial and prove the process, which has been branded New Earth Advanced Thermal (NEAT). The patented technology will be supplied for both New Earth’s own energy projects and schemes by third party developers.
New Earth has a unique approach to funding its facilities and this has allowed us to continue investment in new facilities and services in spite of turbulent economic times. In 2008 New Earth and its fund management partners established an open-ended investment fund to invest in the infrastructure being developed by the Company. This ensures the business has access to adequate cost-effective funding to support its continued growth, while minimising shareholder dilution.
The management and employees of New Earth hold a majority shareholding in the Company, with the balance owned by the well-known environmental fund, Impax Asset Management; the New Earth investment fund; and Carbon Trust, the renewable energy and environmental investment arm of the Government.
