An assessment of energy balance from sugar–based ethanol for fuel–saving and climate policy - the case of an island economy
The study assesses the efficiency of sugar–based ethanol production in Mauritius using the net energy balance and energy ratio. The findings indicate a positive net energy balance. For every one unit of fossil fuel used, the system returns more than six times in terms of renewable energy from ethanol. The fuel savings and other economic benefits which may be accrued to Mauritius are discussed. ...

Assessment of energy saving potentials for protected spaces in commercial buildings
This paper presents the energy conservation improvement potentials of a protected space in a tropical building, which is subjected to various building services and safety requirements. Field measurement was conducted in this study, where the actual environmental conditions of a selected protected lobby and the major sources for space heat gain were systematically measured and studied. Besides, ...

Application of artificial neural network to model the energy output of dairy farms in Iran
An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to assess the energy input–output prediction in dairy farms of Iran. Data used were culled from 50 randomly selected farms using face to face questionnaire approach. The energy input–output analysis was carried out for the parameters of ANN model. Based on performance measures, single hidden layers with 16 neurons in the hidden ...

How civil society groups improved electricity in Thailand
Worldwide, one out of every five people lacks access to modern electricity. Affordability, quality of service, and social and environmental impacts pose great challenges in providing people with the power they need for lighting, cooking, and other activities. Good governance involving open and inclusive practices is essential to overcoming these pressing obstacles. This is part three of a ...

How developing your energy management skills can help develop your career
Late April saw Ireland host the very first and highly successful “ISO 50001 Ireland” conference. Over 100 delegates from industries such as telecoms, energy, pharmaceutical, food & drink and even construction grouped together to discuss their experiences with ISO 50001 certification in the Aviva stadium on the 24th of April. Many of the engineers from these business sectors were ...

Energy benchmarking of South Australian WWTPs
Optimising the energy consumption and energy generation of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is a topic with increasing importance for water utilities in times of rising energy costs and pressures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Assessing the energy efficiency and energy optimisation of a WWTP are difficult tasks as most plants vary greatly in size, process layout and other ...

Innovation dynamics of sustainability journeys for hydrocarbon–rich countries
This paper examines the innovation dynamics of sustainability transitions within hydrocarbon–rich countries, with a particular emphasis upon the emerging solar industries in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In order to examine the dynamics within the current Saudi and UAE energy system and subsequently assess its potential for supporting the successful ...

Commission Report Features Financing in Recommendations to Double U.S. Energy Efficiency
The Alliance to Save Energy’s Commission on National Energy Policy included financing as one of the central recommendations in its recent report, “Energy 2030: Doubling U.S. Energy Productivity by 2030.” The commission consists of some of the key leaders in energy policy and business in the United States. The commission’s plan would use financing programs and policies to ...

Critical review of energy options
Short term measure for dealing with energy crisis is reducing consumption by: 1) improving the efficiency of all energy consuming machines; 2) eliminating the wasteful use of energy. Renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, tidal, waves, etc., do make a significant contribution to demand for energy but they are unlikely to meet the ever increasing consumption. Long term measures may ...

Mobilizing Climate Investment: The role of international climate finance in creating scaled-up, low-carbon energy
Between now and 2050, developing countries need an estimated $531 billion per year of additional investment in energy supply and demand technologies in order to limit global temperature rise to 2° C above pre-industrial levels. To achieve this scale of investment, developing country governments and custodians of international public finance will need to deploy limited public finance in ways ...

Energy analysis and potentials of biodiesel production from Jatropha Curcas in Tunisia
Oleaginous plants such as Jatropha Curcas Linnaeus (JCL), not intended for human consumption but used for biodiesel production, could contribute to beneficial outcomes. This plant grows on poor land (arid and marginal land) and is drought resistant. Jatropha Curcas is native to South America and widely grown in South and Central America, Africa, and Asia (Achten et al., 2007; Kumar et al., 2011). ...

Saving energy and eating better
The US consumer wants food to be fresh, local and organic. But that means larger grocery bills in an economy where most people need them to be smaller. As the New York Times tells it, 20-somethings, just out of college, feel the squeeze the most. They are more intent on Whole Foods-style eating than their predecessors, but less able to afford it. (See “The Unaffordable Luxury of ...

Survey: What will it take to make buildings more energy efficient?
Companies are unaware of the actual costs of their energy use. Less than a third have commissioned energy audits for their buildings. Further, two thirds of those surveyed overestimate the cost of energy efficient construction. A surprising 75 percent saw benefit in energy regulation and described lack of enforcement as a problem. The solution Not too much carrot and not too much stick, ...

Energy Efficient Products: the case of Latin America
Companies manufacturing and selling appliances, equipment and lighting in Latin America (LA) face a growing demand from governments and consumers: reducing energy consumption. In a region of about 20 countries, where Spanish is the dominant language and regulatory systems are based on similar legal models, this demand wouldn’t seem to be a significant regulatory problem to energy-using ...

Benchmarking: How does your building stack up?
Energy benchmarking can help you better understand your commercial property’s energy use and monitor performance over time. It allows for comparisons among similar building types and helps identify which ones could operate more efficiently. The Environmental Protection Agency and its ENERGY STAR® Program offers a free online tool called Portfolio Manager that allows users to track and ...

Exergoeconomic optimisation of steam power plant
The second law of thermodynamics combined with economics forms a powerful tool for systematic analysis and assessment of energy systems. This paper presents an exergoeconomic optimisation of 50 MW steam turbine power plant associated with a large fertiliser industrial unit through Thermoeconomic Evaluation and Optimisation (TEO) method, and identifies the losses in various components. As the ...

Zero touch energy audit: Will it change the game?
What new energy efficiency technologies will change the game? I’d like to use this space on occasion to explore that question and get your feedback on companies that I profile. This week’s company is FirstFuel Software, which it appears could make the conventional energy building audit go the way of the buggy whip. FirstFuel ‘audits’commercial buildings from afar. No ...

Is Occupy Wall St. Occupying the Wrong Street?
My Dad and I have a running joke when we’re in the car together. “Look,” he’ll say. “Gas is cheap. It’s down to $3.39.” Cheap, he means, compared with the month before when it was $3.79 per gallon. The joke illustrates a good point. A few years ago we were flabbergasted by gasoline prices that exceeded $3 per gallon. Now we’re really happy when it ...
