About Event:
We are calling on all Energy Sector stakeholders to participate in this premium annual event and be engaged in the high-level policy discussions during the 3-day conference-exhibition.
The first day will start with a Dialogue with the new Department of Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi. This will be our first opportunity to meet up-close with the new DOE Secretary. This will be a good opportunity for all stakeholders to ask their specific questions about how the new Administration will drive the Energy Future of the Philippines.
We also expect the DOE Secretary to keynote the 6th Philippine Solar Summit 2016” which is a 2-day annual event co-located at the Energy Smart Philippines 2016 and organized by the Philippine Solar Power Alliance (PSPA).
In cooperation with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the best companies implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects supported by the Sustainable Energy Finance program will be recognized. Best practices will be shared by companies that have success stories to tell.
Featured sessions in 2016 include a discussion on the Downstream Natural Gas Future, Biomass Energy Future, and Waste to Energy Future.
Topping the event is the 3-day Energy Smart Exhibition that will highlight the latest innovations and technologies for business and industry to improve their energy management systems.
Conferences
The Energy Smart Conference will gather business leaders, energy experts and policy makers to exchange insights on breaking the cycle of energy crisis and rising energy prices that have been hounding the country year after year and how to establish inclusive, competitive and sustainable energy supply that can support the country’s path to rapid growth and development.
Key players and experts on energy and policy makers will discuss topics on the energy situation and scenario as well as the current initiatives in securing energy both on the demand side (energy efficiency and conservation) and supply side (investment in capacity addition). Please refer to the Main Conference Program for details
Overview:
The 3,d Energy Smart Philippines convenes stakeholders in the Philippine Energy Sector that are advocating for a stronger commitment for an agenda for promoting and building an inclusive, competitive and sustainable energy future. While much has been achieved, more challenges still need to be overcome to secure the country's energy future.
To this day, many regions in the country continue to experience power outages due to low reserves and low capacity of many power plants. Apart from this, the El Nino phenomenon hitting the country is contributing to the long hours of power outages in recent months. This presents an added challenge to the energy sector.
Obviously, the situation leaves a lot of room for energy investments which is the area where the private sector can make a contribution. NEDA states that 'the Philippines must continuously invest in improving the country's energy capacity to attain energy security that will allow the country to sustain its rapid growth and make it more inclusive.' Without adequate energy, inclusive economic growth cannot be achieved. It is estimated that about 20 percent of households or more than 5 million households in the Philippines still do not have electricity. And for those that have access to electricity, they are paying premium prices for electricity which then pulls down the global competitiveness of the Philippines. The agenda towards providing 'Affordable Energy for AH' remains a priority.
The foundations for policy reforms in the energy sector have been laid through the Energy Industry Reform Act, the Renewable Energy Act and the Biofuels Act. These laws have contributed to enhancing the business climate for energy investments. However a bolder implementation is required to move energy development forward faster. These energy laws need further augmentation to fast track the drive towards a sustainable energy future.
The low hanging fruit in this regard is the promotion of energy efficiency and conservation. There is a need to push for a national policy to reduce energy consumption while we build the country's capacity to generate cleaner energy, particularly, natural gas and renewable energy. The goal is to transition from coal to natural gas and renewable energy over the medium-long term.
This is crucial if the Philippines can catch up with bridging the gap between energy supply and demand. This is also essential if we are to achieve the country's commitment to reduce 70% of its carbon emissions by 2030 under its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) as committed during the UNFCCC 21SI Conference of Parties in Paris in Nov 2015. This target can be achieved if we have a strong commitment and clear strategy with regard to utilizing more clean energy in the country's fuel mix.
We call on all energy stakeholders to come together in working towards a committed agenda for an inclusive, competitive, and sustainable Energy Future.
