- Event Type:
- Conference/Seminar
- Date:
- Sep. 4-6, 2017
- Venue:
- Univcrsitat dc Barcelona
- Location:
- Barcelona, , Spain
About Event:
The microgrid opportunity around the world continues to grow significantly. One recent report forecasts a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the market of 12% between 2016-2022, while a second projects it to reach $35 billion by 2025 with a stunning 20.7% CAGR.* The reasons for this include the falling costs of solar energy, advances in energy storage, the drive to mitigate climate change, and the cost savings associated with minimizing fossil fuels in remote generation systems. In addition, microgrids will play a central role in bringing electrification to rural and developing regions in which access to reliable, clean and affordable energy is a high priority.
The event will focus on:
- Microgrid feasibility, design, and implementation
- Refining the business case for off-grid, remote, and island microgrids
- Solar + storage advances
- Project financing and investor perspectives
- Determining the correct technology mix for hybrid energy systems
- Advanced battery, fuel cell, and flow battery technologies
- Microgrid power control, management, and integration
- Integrating distributed renewable energy resources into the grid
- Effective project evaluation, implementation, and management
- Regulatory and public policy advances
- Standards and interoperability issues
- Market drivers and opportunities worldwide
- and more

Pre-Conference Workshop
Women Leadership in Clean Energy Development
Monday, September 4, 2017
13:00 - 15:00
Women leadership in the clean energy sector is a particularly key factor in the advancement of sustainable energy worldwide. Women and girls in rural developing regions carry a huge burden in providing for the cooking, heating and lighting needs of their households - studies have shown that 2.7 billion people rely on open fires and traditional stoves for cooking and heating, and it is safe to assume that a majority of these people are women. Hence, in the effort to bring clean, renewable energy to developing regions, the insights, leadership and entrepreneurship of women throughout the energy value chain is indispensable. Nevertheless, recent studies by the Environment and Gender Index (EGI) find that that women hold only 4% of World Energy Council Chairs, and only 18% of World Energy Council Secretaries.
This pre-conference workshop focuses on:
- The role of women leadership in advancing clean energy initiatives, particularly in developing regions
- Progress and challenges to date in enhancing women's roles in the clean energy industry
- Opportunities for women entrepreneurs and women-led companies in this field
** Speakers to be announced
This pre-conferene workshop will take place at the IREC facilities in Barcelona, and will be followed by a tour of the IREC microgrid demonstration lab, 15:00 - 17:00 on Monday, September 4.
Registered attendees for the main conference on September 5-6 may attend this pre-conference workshop at no additional cost. Those who wish to register for the workshop only may do so by clicking here
Pre-Conference Site Tour
Microgrid Living Laboratory at Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC)
Monday, September 4, 2017
15:00 - 17:00
As part of their registration, conference attendees are invited to participate in a site tour of the Microgrid Living Laboratory at the IREC facilities in Barcelona.
The microgrid lab is the sum of the collaborative project DER IREC 22@ Microgrid, and other projects sponsored or promoted by the utility Endesa, including Smarcity, Verde, Charge & Ride or V2M.
It is a living laboratory with capabilities to investigate different microgrid configurations and apply technologies related to energy flux transfer, power control, communications, electric vehicle, power systems and other technologies.
The microgrid aggregates generation, storage and controllable load units operating in a single system. The communications architecture is composed of a hierarchical layer embodied by an iNode providing global management of the microgrid, and iSockets, located in the lower hierarchy layer.
One main advantage of having a microgrid with emulated power systems is that it can analyse phenomena that arise in uncontrolled manner, such as weather fluctuations, in a rapid and easy way.
The tour of the IREC microgrid lab will take place immediately after conclusion of the pre-conference workshop on 'Women Leadership in Clean Energy Development,' also to be held at the IREC meeting facility, on Monday, September 4, 13:00 - 15:00.
