A Giant Awakes – The First International Trade Fair for Renewable Energy in South Asia
“Independence in terms of energy supply is of the first priority of our nation,” as stated by President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at the first South Asian Renewable Energy Conference which took place on April 18, 2006 in New Delhi. To achieve this goal, India intends to increase the level of energy produced from renewable sources in the electrical power supply, from 5% to 25% by the year 2030.
India is one of the most populous countries in the world, with an economic growth rate of 7.6 % in 2005 (a growth rate of 6.3 % is expected for the 2006/2007 fiscal year). With such high growth rates, India has one of the fastest growing markets in the world. The country comprises the twelfth largest market in the world, in terms of adjusted purchasing power, with a gross domestic product (GDP) of 3.611 billion US dollars, the fourth largest GDP in the world. The Indian government is also pursuing poverty reduction plans, propelled by high economic growth rates, which may transform India into a developed country by the year 2020.
The government elected in May 2004 intends to further instituted reforms and concentrate mainly on improving the infrastructure, particularly in rural regions. The stabilisation of the energy supply plays a very important role in such development, thus making decentralised energy systems paramount in terms of importance. Renewable energy provides the best solution for such issues.
RENEXPO® INDIA 2007 will be the first international trade fair for renewable energies in South Asia, that taking place in New Delhi on April 25 and 26, 2007 in the five star hotel “Le Meridien”. Both Indian and international representatives from the renewable energy sector will be presenting their products and services to visitors from the South Asian region. Solar energy, bioenergy, wind energy and hydropower will be covered at the trade fair, as well as energy efficiency, consulting and financing.
RENEXPO® INDIA 2007 will be taking place within the context of the “2nd South Asian Conference for Renewable Energy 2007”, the largest and most important conference for renewable energy in India. The event is considered to be groundbreaking for inciting the development of renewable energies in South Asia, under the direction of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Over 600 decision makers form the economic and political fields – among them high-ranking government officials from Nepal, Butan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan or Pakistan – will convene in New Delhi to deliberate on future prospects.
The organizer of RENEXPO® INDIA 2007 is REECO India, a subsidiary of the German REECO Group. REECO is one of the most important organizers of trade fairs and conferences dedicated to renewable energies. The ”2nd South Asian Conference for Renewable Energy”, an initiative of the Ministry for Non-Conventional Energy Sources, is organized by the third-largest chamber of commerce in India: the “Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India” (ASSOCHAM). Moreover, the event is supported by the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of External Affairs. The Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh is to inaugurate the event on April 25th in New Delhi.
With an annual investment figure for renewable energy equalling 500 million US dollars and a sector growth rate of 15 % per year, India is one of the most potent markets in the entire world – a giant awakening.
