ABB invests $30m in new Swedish transformer components factory

ABB is investing more than $30 million (£22.6m) in a new factory for transformer components in Sweden.
It is being built within its complex in Ludvika and will boost production as well as expand the capacity and range of its high-voltage dry bushings, which are essential components in electrical networks.
The company said the market for high-voltage bushings has been growing due to a rise in global demand for electricity and an increasing number of electrical transmission networks, used to transmit energy from renewable sources.
Bushings are hollow cone-shaped, mostly ceramic, devices that allow electrical conductors to pass safely through partitions – such as walls or tanks – and insulate the conductor and its electrical field from it.
While they usually use oil as an insulating material, the “dry” bushings that will be produced at the new factory will use epoxy instead, which ABB claims will make them safer and more environmentally-friendly.
