Abengoa takes part in meeting with Ban Ki-Moon and the Spanish private sector
To mark the launch of the new Development Agenda, the Spanish network of the Global Compact organized a meeting between Ban Ki-Moon and Spain’s leading companies on October 29.
Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B/P SM /NASDAQ: ABGB), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, took part in the meeting held in Madrid on October 29 between Ban Ki-Moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and representatives from Spain’s leading companies in order to present the Development Agenda, which includes a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Ban Ki-Moon used the meeting, organized by the United Nations Global Compact, to encourage businesses to take action related to the 17 goals. Among other issues, he stressed the need for women to hold management positions to encourage gender equality, as well as highlighting two current issues – urging Spanish companies to take a lead in preserving the environment, with the historic Paris climate conference due later this year; and the refugee crisis, in which the private sector can play a more active role by creating jobs or social action programs.
During his speech, he explained how important it is that the private sector incorporates the SDGs into its global strategy, explaining that “it has a central role to play in the success of each of the global goals”.
Abengoa is firmly committed to the principles of the United Nations Global Compact and promoting the Sustainable Development Goals, many of which it implements through its business and its corporate commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change.
