Accelerating zero-emission building ambitions in the MENA region
Ecofys leads a consortium of local consultants and agencies to accelerate the use of more efficient and renewable energy-based heating and cooling systems in buildings in the Middle East and North Africa. The project will support relevant private actors pilot projects in the MENA region, covering energy efficiency measures and the use of renewable energy systems in buildings.
With a participatory approach involving different groups of stakeholders, Ecofys will analyse differences, individual strengths and weaknesses of the legal and economic framework in the target countries. The project team will develop stakeholder-specific policy modules to overcome barriers and increase the energy performance standard in the building sector. These activities will be accompanied by policy dialogues, providing ad-hoc policy support on topics like developments in the international climate debate or the integration of the project’s results in national climate plans (Nationally Determined Contributions, NDCs).
Results and insights will be shared through national and regional workshops as well as through a dedicated project website.
The project will run until the end of 2018 and is part of the international climate initiative (IKI), supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB).
