ACCIONA Windpower to Supply 3-megawatt Turbines to Prince Edward Island Energy Corporation
- 10 AW3000/116 turbines to be installed at the 30 MW Hermanville & Clear Springs Wind Project in eastern Kings County
- Project includes 15-year full-service O&M agreement with ACCIONA and utilizes a unique 12 kV collection system.
WEST BRANCH, Iowa--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- ACCIONA Windpower and Prince Edward Island Energy Corporation (PEIEC) have signed a turbine supply agreement for the Hermanville & Clear Springs Wind Project. The turbine supply agreement is the first between the two companies and comes after a competitive Request for Proposals (RFP) process undertaken by PEIEC, which included touring ACCIONA Windpower’s manufacturing facilities in Spain and reviewing the company’s experience and operational history.
The agreement includes the delivery of 10 ACCIONA Windpower AW3000/116 wind turbine generators each with a nameplate capacity of 3 megawatts and a rotor diameter of 116-meters. The turbines will be installed on steel towers as part of the Hermanville & Clear Springs Wind Project. Under the agreement, ACCIONA Windpower will also operate and maintain the turbines for the first 15 years of the project.
The Hermanville & Clear Springs Wind Project will be a 30-megawatt wind power project in eastern King’s County that will enter into commercial operation in 2013. The project is in keeping with Prince Edward Island’s established Energy Accord and its 10 Point Plan on Wind Energy.
“We’re very excited to partner with Prince Edward Island Energy Corporation on first Canadian installation of our AW3000 turbine,” said Joe Baker, CEO of ACCIONA Windpower North America. “PEI Energy Corporation has done an excellent job in selecting a turbine that will deliver low-cost, clean energy to its customers.”
The AW3000 design is based on the company’s proven 1.5-megawatt model, but at twice the capacity is designed to create a greater return on investment, saving on additional foundations, access roads and balance of plant infrastructure that would otherwise be required of projects with smaller capacity turbines.
The Hermanville & Clear Springs Wind Project also benefits from ACCIONA’s 12,000-volt generation technology, which provides a unique advantage compared to the low-voltage designs of other manufacturers. ACCIONA Windpower is the only turbine manufacturer using a medium-voltage generator design which enables the turbines to inject power directly into the collection system, eliminating step-up transformers and their associated electrical losses and increasing electrical efficiency to provide a more cost-effective design.
With this contract, ACCIONA Windpower continues its expansion as a global supplier based on the reliability and competitiveness of its products, amply demonstrated in different conditions and environments. At present more than 90 wind parks in 13 countries –17 within the next two years- operate the company’s wind turbines.
