Adapting Telecom and Web Technologies and Techniques for Smart Grid Prominent in May IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter


PISCATAWAY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- IEEE, the world's largest professional organization for the advancement of technology, published the May edition of the IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter. Articles in this issue examine a common occurrence, adapting telecommunications and Web technologies and techniques aligned with Smart Grid, among other topics. Vibhor Julka and Ronald Mao specify the enhancements required for broadband wireless networks to efficiently carry the communications of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure. Vibhor Julka is a member of IEEE and has over 17 years of experience in telecom industry system design and 3G/4G wireless standards development. Ronald Mao is a member of IEEE and a contributor to 3G/4G wireless standards. He is a senior manager at Huawei Technologies USA, Inc.

Inaki Laresgoiti relates the new role distribution networks will take in future intelligent grids, with the integration of most renewable and distributed resources and the requirement of extensive use of information and communication technologies. Since 1989, Inaki Laresgoiti has headed the field of support systems for network operation at Labein and later on Tecnalia, both in Spain.

Kwok W. Cheung foresees that a smarter dispatch system and better predictive model for generation resources is required to cope with the new uncertainties. Kwok Cheung is a senior member of IEEE. He is also the R&D director, market management systems, at Alstom Grid in the US.

Antonello Monti and Ferdinanda Ponci explain that the realization of Smart Grid will require changes and evolution in education and training systems, numerical simulator tools and testing environments, and analysis methods and design, to handle its massive complexity. Antonello Monti is a senior member, IEEE, and the director of the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems, E.ON Energy Research Center, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen University, Aachen, Germany. Ferdinanda Ponci is also a senior member of IEEE and is with the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems.
