Steve Brewster and Dr. Alžbeta Boušková from ADI Systems Asia Pacific recently delivered papers at the Bioenergy Association of New Zealand (BANZ) conference. The conference, titled “Extraction of Value from Industrial and Municipal Waste,” was held in Auckland on August 14-15, 2014. Since Mr. Brewster and Dr. Boušková are both members of the BANZ Biogas Interest Group committee, they were also heavily involved in the preparation of the conference programme and speaker selection.

The aim of the conference was to showcase waste-to-energy technologies, demonstrate successful utilization of biogas in New Zealand and Australia, and discuss further potential for reducing organic waste disposal to landfills via efficient utilization of existing and/or new assets.

Auckland Council used the conference as an opportunity to announce its plans for transitioning to “zero waste to landfill” and maximizing financial and environmental benefits from that waste. Keynote speakers from Sweden-based company Borås Energi and from Canadian company Enerkem shared success stories of producing biofuels and chemicals from waste materials.

Mr. Brewster gave a presentation highlighting the growth of biogas use in Australasia and the potential for even wider utilization of this undervalued resource. Dr. Boušková’s paper focused on ADI Systems’ experience using on-site industrial wastewater treatment as an energy-producing means of avoiding high-trade waste charges.

In general, the conference was a positive indication of the ever-growing interest in biogas technologies in New Zealand and a strong aspiration for waste minimization and beneficial reuse.
