Africa Week, 12-16th October
The theme for 2015 is “Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Moving from Aspirations to Reality” in the context of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
The Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) aims, to promote and mobilise international support for African Union (AU)’s Agenda 2063 and its First Ten-Year Implementation Plan, as well as to highlight their synergies with the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This year marks the 52nd anniversary celebration of the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). It is a little more than a decade since the formation of the African Union, which seeks to promote “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in global arena”.
Meetings for Africa Week, held at UN headquarters, proceeded with praise for Africa’s integration efforts towards launching the CFTA (Continental Free Trade Area), which is expected to be established by 2017. Progress has already been made through the completion of the Tripartite Free Trade Area project in June this year, it covers 26 countries and represents more than half of the continent's gross domestic product (GDP).
Various speakers (and continental bodies including the Economic Commission for Africa and the African Development Bank) are expected to discuss the challenges and opportunities for development in Africa. So far, the centrality of the CFTA as well as infrastructure and energy development, education and skills-training and good governance for the achievement of Africa’s transformation and inclusive development vision have all been reiterated.
The Week also aims to identify the kind of support the United Nations could further extend to African regional and sub-regional organisations in the implementation of Agenda 2063, in ways that ensure synergy with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
