AMO FOA Targets Advanced Components for Next-Generation Electric Machines

Source: US Department of Energy

AMO’s Next Generation Electric Machines (NGEM) program announced up to $20 million is now available to develop a new generation of energy efficient, high power density, high speed integrated MV drive systems for a wide variety of critical energy applications. This Financial Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is focused on developing medium voltage (MV) integrated drive systems that leverage the benefits of state-of-the-art power electronics (i.e., wide band gap devices) with high RPM, high power density and energy efficient megawatt (MW) class electric motors in three primary areas: (1) chemical and petroleum refining industries; (2) natural gas infrastructure; and (3) general industrial applications.

AMO plans to select four to six projects, through the NGEM funding opportunity, that demonstrate more efficient use of electricity, as well as reduced drive system size and weight, developing lasting capabilities for motor material development, design, and analysis that are cost‐shared with industry stakeholders.

An informational webinar on this FOA will be held on April 1, 2015 at 1:00 pm EDT.

Concept Papers are due by April 16, 2015. Applicants must submit a Concept Paper by the due date to be eligible to submit a full application.
