Ballard clean energy fuel cell system to be deployed in China

VANCOUVER -- Ballard Power Systems has announced the sale of a 175 kilowatt (kW) ClearGen™ distributed generation fuel cell system to Azure Hydrogen Energy Science and Technology Corporation ofBeijing,China (Azure).

Azure is Ballard's partner inChinawith a focus on development and enhancement of hydrogen energy technology for a variety of applications in that marketplace.

Mr. Grand Mao, Chairman of Azure said, 'The market for stationary fuel cell power has significant potential inChina. Projects such as the deployment of this 175 kilowatt ClearGen™ system represent an important step in continuing to grow market awareness of fuel cell products in my country.'

Azure plans to display the ClearGen™ system and ElectraGen™-H2 backup power systems at the fifth World Hydrogen Technologies Convention (WHTC2013), to be held inShanghai,China September 25-28, 2013. The convention will cover all aspects of hydrogen energy, including production methods, storage and distribution, utilization, economics and environmental impact. Following WHTC2013, Azure is expected to redeploy the system to another as yet unnamed location inChina.

'Ballard and Azure have worked together in deploying our hydrogen-fuelled ElectraGenTM-H2 products for backup power trials with China Mobile,' said Larry Stapleton, Ballard's Vice President of Sales. 'We are pleased that our partner will now also be pursuing larger stationary fuel cell opportunities in China using our ClearGenTM product.'

The ClearGen™ system is scalable to meet the hydrogen availability and power requirements of any particular site. Earlier in 2013, Ballard also announced the sale of a 175 kW ClearGen™ system to a customer inCalifornia. Repeat builds have helped to optimize the system, leading to a smaller footprint and improved serviceability.

Product cost reductions and market introduction of the ClearGen™ system has been enabled by funding from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), an arm's-length, not-for-profit corporation funded by the Government of Canada that helps commercialize Canadian clean technologies, readying them for growth and export markets.

The announcement comes in the wake of a series of Ballard sales in the international marketplace. Last week Ballard announced the signing of an agreement between Van Hool NV, Europe's fourth largest bus manufacturer, and the Transit Authority in Aberdeen, Scotlandfor delivery of 10 buses that will be powered by Ballard's 150 kilowatt FCvelocityTM-HD6 fuel cell modules.

Also last week a supply agreement with the Center for Transportation and the Environment for a 150 kilowatt FCvelocityTM-HD6 fuel cell module to be integrated into a bus that will be deployed with CTTransit inHartford,Connecticut was announced. The All-American fuel cell hybrid bus is expected to be delivered in 2015.

That announcement came shortly after Ballard announced signing of an agreement with the Volkswagen Group for a major Engineering Services contract to advance development of fuel cells for use in powering demonstration cars in Volkswagen's fuel cell automotive research program. The contract term is for 4-years, with an option for a 2-year extension. The expected contract value is in the range of C$60-100 million.

Ballard recently announced a partnership with Anglo American Platinum Limited to develop a prototype Home Generator system for deployment in Africaand elsewhere (See GLOBE-Net article 'Bringing Fuel Cell Technology to the Home').

Last month Ballard announced the sale of a 175 kilowatt ClearGen™ distributed generation fuel cell system to the Blue Lake Rancheria Tribe ofHumboldt County,California. The fuel cell system will be integrated with a biomass gasifier and syngas purification unit to form an integrated biomass-to-fuel cell power solution. The system will be the first of its kind, with the potential to double the efficiency of biomass-to-power generation.

Also last month Ballard was awarded approximately C$2.0 million in funding from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) to extend a project for the commercialization of the Company's fuel cell power module for the transit bus market.
