Benefit from cassava plants - Hofstetter builds a CDM plant in Indonesia
Hindelbank -- Indonesia ranks as the fourth largest cassava producer in the world. Because of its starchy tubers, cultivation of the cassava plant is an essential part of agriculture in Indonesia. In the Lampung region on the island of Sumatra, the Sahabat Group is expanding the existing production of cassava starch. During the process of extracting the starch, waste water is produced which flows into lagoons specially constructed for this purpose. These covered lagoons act as large anaerobic reactors and as the organic substances break down, biogas is formed. This biogas is subsequently cleaned, conditioned and converted, contributing to a cleaner environment.
The Sahabat Group presented the biogas project to the UNFCCC, the official authority for CO2 emissions trading, and it was approved. They are now authorised to produce CER (Certified Emission Rights) which can be traded. Furthermore they will supply the biogas to gas engines for the purpose of generating electricity. This electricity is mainly used to satisfy its own power needs.
The criteria set by the UNFCCC are extremely stringent. The Sahabat Group needed a partner who is highly experienced in designing and building a plant which is fully compliant with these stringent rules. That is why the customer chose a supplier who is able to provide worldwide references in this field and awarded the order to Hofstetter Umwelttechnik AG.
Hofstetter provides the entire gas conditioning process. In the first step, the cooling reduces the temperature of the gas to 15°C and removes the moisture at the same time. After being cooled, the pressure of the gas is increased. It is then supplied to the gas engines. Any surplus gas is incinerated in an environmentally-compatible manner in a high-temperature flare stack in accordance with UNFCCC regulations. UNFCCC-approved measurement systems are used to record the required CDM data, thereby ensuring the successful verification of CO2 emission certificates.
For the processing of biogas, it is essential that the design and operation be safe. Hofstetter plants are constructed in accordance with the most stringent European ATEX Directives and are of the highest quality.
Mr Arifin Sjaichudin of PT Sahabat Agritama praises Hofstetter: 'We put a lot of confidence in this Swiss company and are convinced of its performance. Its plants are of the highest quality and the impressive number of references, especially relating to CDM, convinced us to choose Hofstetter for this important project. For us, plant safety and the ability to generate electricity profitably and gain CO2 credits take top priority. In Hofstetter, we have found the partner we can rely on.'
