DOE Awards Additional MEGA-BIO Project
On August 2, 2017, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced that a fourth project under the MEGA-BIO: Bioproducts to Enable Biofuels Funding Opportunity would be awarded up to $1.8 million. Michigan State University was selected to manage the fourth project, which will work in partnership with the University of Wisconsin–Madison and MBI International to optimize a two-stage process for deconstruction of biomass into two clean intermediate streams, specifically sugars for the production of hydrocarbon fuels...
Minnesota Doubles Summer Biofuel Mandate for Diesel
On August 3, 2017, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton announced that the state will implement a new biodiesel standard in May 2018 that will increase the biodiesel blend mandate from 10 percent (B10) to 20 percent (B20) between April and September each year. Currently under the state’s biodiesel program, diesel fuel sold in Minnesota must contain at least 10 percent biodiesel during the summer months, with the blend lowering to 5 percent from October to March. While the new mandate doubles the blend requirement...
Biofuel industry sends letter on RVP to senate environment and public works committee
On June 12, 2017, 28 companies representing the advanced and cellulosic biofuel industry sent a letter to the members of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee requesting their support for the Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act (S. 517), which is scheduled to be marked up in the Environment and Public Works Committee before the August recess. The letter claims that the Act, which would extend the Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) waiver to ethanol blends above 10 percent, is vital to the advanced biofuel...
Air Liquide to Supply Oxygen to the UK’s First Advanced Biofuels Facility
Air Liquide has been awarded a five-year contract to supply a large volume of oxygen per annum to an advanced biofuels facility being constructed by Advanced Plasma Power and Cadent. The high-purity oxygen will be used to convert 10,000 tonnes per annum of household waste into 22GWh of biosubstitute natural gas (BioSNG), enough to heat 1,500 homes or fuel 75 heavy goods vehicles. Construction of the facility has already started and it is due to deliver gas to the grid in the first half of 2018. Once it has...
