Bill introduced to tackle electroindustry products
Source: Bergeson & Campbell, P.C.
Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX) has introduced a bill that would uniformly restrict the amount of several potentially hazardous materials in electrical products and equipment. Such restrictions would have the effect of ending trade barriers based on the content of materials in a product offered for sale. If passed, after July 1, 2010, products could not have a concentration level of greater than 0.1% by weight of lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and/or polybrominated diphenyl ethers. Products affected by the legislation include those used to facilitate directly the transmission, distribution, or control of electricity; using electrical power for tasks such as arc welding, lighting, signaling protection, and communication; and material used in medical imaging or in electrical motors and generators.
