Black & Veatch professionals to share hydropower solutions at Waterpower Xvi Conference
Black & Veatch hydropower and hydraulic structures experts will share their knowledge and proven solutions at the Waterpower XVI conference July 27-30 in Spokane, Wash.
“Interest in hydropower has surged with the worldwide focus on renewable energy,” said Dan McCarthy, President and CEO of Black & Veatch’s global water business. “Hydropower projects are truly sustainable. In addition to providing a clean supply of energy, these types of projects can improve the reliability of an area’s water supply and protect communities from flooding.”
One example of the sustainable benefits hydropower provides is in China, where Black & Veatch experts are overseeing construction of what will be the highest roller-compacted concrete dam in the world and fourth largest hydro station. When completed, the Long Tan Hydroelectric Dam will protect 12 million people and 480,000 hectares of residential, commercial and agricultural property from flooding, while providing 18.7 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually.
“During the last 40 years, Black & Veatch has been involved in more than 500 hydropower projects, representing more than 50,000 megawatts of renewable energy,” said Carlos Araoz, Director of Black & Veatch’s global hydropower and hydraulic structures business. “Waterpower is an excellent forum to share and showcase our innovative processes and capabilities, as well as sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions, helping to advance this important industry.”
During the conference, Black & Veatch experts will lead the State of the Industry of Hydropower Project Delivery Methods symposium. In addition, Black & Veatch professionals will participate in two roundtable forums: Strategies for Dealing with Aging Plant Equipment and Infrastructure; and Buying Equipment: Procurement Issues in the Global Marketplace.
Black & Veatch professionals will also present the following technical papers:
- Design Development of Floating Surface Collector at a Reservoir
- Innovative Surge Shaft Liner Installed Under Water
- Hydraulic Evaluation of Fish Attraction Potential at a Dam
In addition to Araoz, Black & Veatch experts who are scheduled to present and participate in roundtables include Monty Nigus, Brian Friesz, Jim Richter, Tom Haag, Fred Reynolds and Bruce Benson.
“Hydropower brings together Black & Veatch’s leading expertise in both energy and water,” said McCarthy. “We have much to offer our clients and colleagues through knowledge-transfer opportunities like this conference.”
