Bywaters moves into its new home in Bromley-by-Bow, London
Bywaters, the recycling and waste management company that has been providing recycling services in and around London since 1952, has recently moved three of its four sites to 9.2 acre premises in Bromley-by-Bow, London.
Bywaters, with a turnover exceeding £20 million, has relocated due to the construction of the Olympic Park for 2012.
Three of Bywaters’ sites were directly on Olympics’ land and the company has had a long-standing plan in place for the eventuality of the Olympics coming to London.
The move to the 9.2 acre modern site makes Bywaters the most centrally-located recycling and waste management operator in central and east London. The company has been investing in new state-of-the-art technology – comparable with the very best in Europe – which gives Bywaters the capacity to handle up to 500,000 tonnes of recyclables a year, making it the largest undercover recycling facility in the UK from March 2007.
The new site brings together all Bywaters’ office staff and the majority of operational staff. The Gateway Road site – a Waste Transfer Station and Leyton Reuse & Recycling Centre – to the east of Hackney Marshes remains a further Bywaters’ site and will shortly be redeveloped.
“Remaining so close to the Olympic Park is a tremendous opportunity for Bywaters,” says
John Glover, Managing Director. “We have already gained great experience being heavily involved in the construction projects at Canary Wharf. We are proud to win awards for our innovative waste handling systems designed specifically for construction waste. We hope that our track record will stand us in good stead for opportunities ahead.”
The move to new premises has also timed with Bywaters investing in three new Toyota Prius’ hybrid petrol/electric cars for use by account management staff. There are also plans for rainwater harvesting facilities (to be used for washing vehicles), wind turbines and solar PV (photovoltaic) panels for renewable energy sources. The company is also in discussion with British Waterways about opening a new lock – at Bow Locks - in order to transport recyclables by barge – another environmentally-conscious solution to a problem in transporting waste.
“2006 marks one of the most exciting years in the development of Bywaters,” says John Glover. “We are at another turning point with the company where you can see the excitement and the potential for Bywaters through all our staff and operations.”
