Canadian Biogas Association Encourages the Use of Biogas to Achieve Canada’s Climate Strategy Goals
Ottawa, Ontario (November 28, 2016) - The Canadian Biogas Association encourages Canadian policy makers to consider biogas as a significant contributor to help the country meet its ambitious climate change commitments. Biogas is a renewable fuel derived from the breakdown of organic material and can be upgraded to produce renewable natural gas (RNG). The CBA supports 2% of the natural gas supply to be renewable natural gas (RNG) by 2020 and 10% RNG in the natural gas supply by 2030. With appropriate government policies, the utilization of biogas has the potential to reduce GHG emissions by 37.5 million tonnes C02e - more than 10% of Canada's target.
'Biogas offers a significant opportunity to manage carbon sources, whether this is agricultural bi-products, the processing of source-separated materials from residents or commercial businesses, or landfill gas recovery, and also reduce GHG emissions' stated Jennifer Green, Executive Director of the Canadian Biogas Association.
Biogas produces renewable heat, electricity, and pipeline quality gas (RNG) that can be distributed through the pipeline. The major uses of biogas include transportation, household heating and industrial, commercial and institutional processes. There are over 100 biogas facilities in Canada - primarily in British Columbia and Ontario - with most generating renewable electricity, and approximately 11 RNG facilities either operating or under construction. Key to the development of more biogas projects is new government policy and price support. Biogas policies in the U.S. and Europe are examples where governments have encouraged the development of the industry.
The utilization of biogas reduces fugitive methane emissions from agriculture and landfills. The production of RNG from biogas displaces fossil-based heat, electricity and transportation fuels. Biogas is a waste management solution, utilizing organic material to generate energy and returning nutrients to the soil. In addition to methane abatement and displacing fossil fuel use, biogas also offers high quality jobs and economic growth to Canadians in their own communities.
The Canadian Biogas Association encourages federal and provincial governments to work with industry to develop conditions where more of this valuable fuel can be generated in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while recovering organic resources.
