Charles Hendry to be responsible for renewable energy, as DECC reveals minister`s responsibilities
Charles Hendry will be responsible for renewable energy and planning reform after ministerial responsibilities at Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) were announced.
Ministers will be supporting the secretary of state Chris Huhne, who will be responsible for:
- DECC strategy and budgets
- Energy market reform
- Energy security
- Devolved administrations
Yesterday (24 May), the Government announced £85m will have to be cut from DECC, which Chris Huhne will have to implement. Additionally, it seems he will be the figure faced with reforming the Renewable Obligation scheme and the Government’s proposals to establish a full system of feed-in tariffs in electricity, which have caused concern among experts in the energy sector.
Charles Hendry becomes the Minister of State for Energy, responsible for:
- Renewable energy
- Planning reform and consents
- Regulation and competition in the energy sector
- The energy council
- Nuclear
As the minister in charge of renewable energy, Charles Hendry is likely to be a figurehead for the energy from waste and biomass sectors. Furthermore, as the Government replaces the Infrastructure Planning Commission with what the Coalition Government describes as a “democratically accountable” system, Hendry may be key in how the new planning administration is put together.
