Cogeneration Unit Begins Operations at National Gypsum Company Facility in New Jersey
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Recycled Energy Development (RED) and National Gypsum Company (NGC) announced the opening of a combined heat and power (CHP or cogeneration) project at NGC’s Burlington, New Jersey, facility. The project produces approximately 3.4 megawatts of clean electricity and delivers more than 30 MMBtu of thermal energy each hour of operation, resulting in an overall efficiency of greater than 90 percent.
RED’s cogeneration system provides clean power and thermal energy to NGC’s wallboard production facility, thereby reducing NGC’s costs, energy intensity, and greenhouse-gas emissions. The system captures the excess heat that is a natural byproduct of the gas turbine’s combustion and utilizes it within the manufacturer’s board dryer in order to dry wallboard.
“RED’s project is helping NGC save money and cut pollution,” said Sean Casten, RED’s president and CEO. “The facility demonstrates the ability to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions profitably.”
“CHP is benefitting our company’s bottom line,” said John Corsi, Vice President of Manufacturing Operations and Engineering of NGC. “This facility allows NGC to further strengthen our competitiveness, increase our reliability, as well as improve our environmental stewardship.”
The project benefitted from a $1.3-million competitive grant administered by New Jersey’s Economic Development Authority and Board of Public Utilities.
