MAKO Tidal Turbines has announced the first installation of tidal turbines at a working port anywhere in the world in conjunction with the Gladstone Ports Corporation in Queensland, Australia

This will bethe firstinstallation of tidal turbines at aworking portanywhere in the world and represents the initial step of broader collaboration under a Cooperation Agreement signed between MAKO and GPC.The tidal turbine will be attached to an existing structureadjacent to GPC’s wharves. The facilitiesand tidal flowsat Barney Point are similar to many other ports around the world.Gladstone Ports CEO Peter O`Sullivan said GPC has long recognised the potential to extract energy from the tides and has welcomed the opportunityto investigate this renewable power option as part of the Corporation’s pathway to a sustainable future.The project will investigatehow tidal energy can contribute to Australia’s energy mix by producingclean, predictable renewable energyright at the point where it is beingused.Part of the installation program includes research to confirm the turbinewill have minimal environmental impact on the localmarine fauna.MAKO CEO Douglas Hunt said, “GPCis an ideal partner,with the necessary combination of vision and expertise to deployour unique MAKO tidal turbine system in a commercialsetting.“The Gladstone Port site demonstrateshow MAKO tidal turbines will be installed cost-effectively and in much shorter timeframes than iffloating or seabed mountingsystems were to be used.MTT is also using the site to demonstrate the low-cost transmission of real-time data to itsSydney control centrewhichwill beusedfor performance monitoring and maintenance.The MAKO .7 tidal turbine is scheduled for installation in Gladstone during Septemberandnow commercialisation has been completed, MTT has plans for the roll-out of many further MAKO tidalturbines in Australia and globally
