On the island of St. Croix, located in the Virgin Islands, the Captain Morgan rum distillery uses a Centaur 50 gas turbine for combined heat and power (CHP). The unit provides both electricity and steam for the distillery's operations.
Diageo chose the Centaur 50 engine from Solar Turbines for its ability to use water injection to control nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission levels and the flexibility that allows the engine to operate on natural gas and LPG. CHP is the most viable option since it allows the company to meet a wide range of steam and electricity requirements.
Pnor to the installation of the Centaur 50, Diageo purchased their power from the local utility. This investment in the CHP plant provides measureable cost savings.
