Conservative MP criticises labour energy policy in blog
The shadow minister for Energy and Climate Change has slammed the Labour Party’s energy policy and dubbed it the party of “energy insecurity” in a blog.
Writing in the Blue Blog published on the Conservative Party website, Charles Hendry MP for Wealden in East Sussex, focused on the importance of energy security for Great Britain and criticised the Labour party for not showing enough direction in its policy on renewable energy.
Hendry wrote: “The Government has set ambitious targets for delivery on renewable energy by 2020 but not set out a pathway to achieve that target. We are therefore in a position where nobody knows what needs to be done by when to meet the target.”
This follows the release of the Conservative’s new energy policy last month which aimed to “rebuild security” in the energy sector by promoting renewable energy sources such as biomass and the use of waste products to generate energy.
In order to do this the Conservatives propose to minimise the cost of capital investments in renewable energy by replacing the Renewables Obligation, where possible, with feed-in tariffs as it believes this should provide a more “stable” revenue stream for new energy developments.
Additionally the Conservative Manifesto, released today, pledges to “promote small and large-scale low carbon energy production and biogas” and a Conservative Party spokesman confirmed that anaerobic digestion technology will feature as part of this promotion.
Hendry commented: “Labour’s record on energy is one of dithering and delay interspersed by destructive and frequent Ministerial reshuffles providing no continuity of policy.”
As Parliament has now been dissolved ahead of the general election, Hendry was unavailable for further comment on the blog.
